As a DJ, purveyor of underground music and lover of quirky coffee shops & multi-use spaces, I wanted to design an identity for a space that materializes all these functions into one. Not following the traditional tropes of a night club, Flipside is a coffee shop by day, dance floor by (occasional) nights that gives visitors the opportunity to experience a space with hi fidelity sound in combination with food and drinks.

In order to represent the quirky, multidisciplinary space that maintained pose and consistency, the logo type is arranged in a symmetrical format with flipped punctuation to play on those characteristics. Even though it was a project for school, this was how I imagine we as designers, can build worlds through exercising different mediums.

Brand Typography

Primary Typeface

The main typeface to be used for all of Flipside’s material is Museo Sans. Museo Sans is a well equipped sans serif that comes with a lot of glyphs and flexibility for font sizing. It is fun playful, modern, and a bit quirky. It truly represents both the serious and playful side of flipsides programming. Any of the weights can be used where the designer sees fit as long as readability and legibility isn’t sacriced and heiarchy is clear.

Secondary Typeface

The second typeface is Cupidus. Cupidus is a quirky rounded sans serif that invites readers to a visual playground that suggests imagination and freedom. It can be used in various promotional material to help communicate the expressive nature of the space and customers

Gradient Shift

Gradient Shift is a monthly party that takes place at Flipside. Highlighting local DJS and the spaces' unique ability to flip from afternoon to night programming seemesly.
